I thoroughly enjoyed episode 11.19. Really interesting, freaky MOTW and some nice character stuff. It also made me think a lot about love in all its various forms. As we all do, I have lots of head-canon around Sam and Dean and in my personal head-canon, Dean is bi-sexual. That head-canon and my contemplation about love led me to this coda...

So I really liked the last episode. It was one that seems to have divided a lot of people Some loved it, some hated it. I mostly just think it's great that Show can still generate so much passion after 11 seasons.
Anyway, I haven't done a coda for a while. Lots of reasons, but partly because I haven't been inspried to write anything. Often because I just felt there was nothing I could add and last week, because I utterly lacked the capacity to be articulate after such an intense episode.
This week...I guess you could call this a tribute to the badass women of Supernatural.
I  was delighted to see Rowena again and I had no issue at all with her coming back via a spell in her leg. We know witches are powerful--think Maggie and Don Stark who laid out leviathans with a flick of the wrist, but didn't want to get involved. Witches are not heros in this universe. They are selfish and they are survivors. Of course Rownena had a back up plan. I've also decided that I love Billie and Amara far too much to really view them as 'baddies'. And apparently I'm still not over Charlie's death...

I enjoyed the last episode. I've always loved Jodi and I've never minded either Alex or Claire. In last week's ep, I really liked all three of the women and the Sam and Dean we had was great, so I didn't feel ripped off in that regard or anything. Solid ep for me with bonus cooking and cleaning!

This week's coda was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight's glorious gifspam and associated conversations and the title was inspired by a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] kalliel (and others) about the difficulty of naming fics and writing summaries!  :D

Loved the last episode. It made me think about the stages of life, about what gives a life meaning and how that can change.

Firstly, happy birthday, Dean Winchester!
Secondly...there were things I liked and things I didn't like about the last ep, but I'm still engaged and intrigued and have many thinky thoughts about where things might be going, so all is good.

This piece is mostly an RIP for Rowena, even though I don't think she will (and don't want her to), this being Supernatural and all.

I always enjoy case based episodes and I like the old school creepy ones...and what is creepier than ghost possessed people in scary masks? The bunny was terrifying, as was the clown. I'm not a huge fan of Sheriff Donna, but she's starting to grow on me. She's hiding a lot underneath that chipper, darn tootin' mask.
Anyway, suffice to say I enjoyed the ep and I'm bummed that we don't get a new one this week. I guess that's because you're all too busy in America baking pie and stuffing turkey to watch television on Wednesday night? On which note, I hope my American Flisties have a wonderful Thanksgiving on Thursday...mmm turkey...

Another sensational episode. I haven't been this speculative since we all wondered what was wrong with Sam! Did I say that already? I may have. Anyway...if you're going to mess around with religions on your Show, you may as well go the whole way and really poke at it.
You know, like suggesting that the Deity of one of the bigger patriarchal religions on the planet had a sister who he betrayed and locked away...
After this episode I had to go and re-read [livejournal.com profile] kalliel's wonderful story Every Little Girl's Favorite, because it just fits so well into what seems to be becoming canon!

The episode left me so intrigued for what's coming next in Amara's storyline and wondering how Sam and Dean--two boys from Kansas-- fit into the bigger cosmic picture.

Another awesome episode that I loved muchly. I may even have loved this one as much as Baby, but then I did kind of spoil Baby for myself by thinking the Impala was going to turn into a person at some point!
Anyway, the new writer did good: knew her SPN history and made use of it. And it was a nice case!fic linked to the main story arc, with a lovely early seasons vibe. Very enjoyable.
There's lot of interesting speculation about why there was such a focus on how losing your soul impacts different people different ways and [livejournal.com profile] ash48 made the suggestion that perhaps Amara sucked out Dean's soul in episode one, my response to which is  "Ooooohhhh! Fascinating!" Dean certainly has seemed a little flat this season, but then who wouldn't, given what he's been through? At this point I'm not 100% sold on the idea of Soulless!Dean, but it's certainly a possibility and I can't wait to find out! And what's with the dark winged things that Len feels might hatch from inside him? Was that just a super creepy analogy or something more literal?

The only things I knew about 11.04 were...that it was called Baby and it was going to be told from the Impala's POV. For some reason, I interpreted this as 'Baby gets turned into a person' and I was quite nervous about the whole episode. Consequently, I spent the entire episode waiting with trepidation for Baby to turn into a person and was quite perplexed when that didn't happen! It wasn't until my second watch-through that I realised that practically the whole thing was filmed from inside the car! So then I had to watch it again.

This episode had pretty much everything I want from an episode, which caused me no end of trauma when trying to decide what to write about, because apparently my episode tags are either fix-it fics or that one scene I wanted but didn't get. What to write about when you get everything you wanted?

I considered writing about Dean's: "I'm not little, like I actually was when he taught me to drive", but I've read more than one excellent fic written by really talented writers that deal with Dean learning to drive when he was a little kid, so I decided against that. In the end I decided to write about Piper, for the simple reason that I thought her scene was shot through her gaze and I appreciated that. Also, I do wonder if she's going to turn out to be something more. I always remember that Ruby was initially presented to us as an insignificant hook up...

There were things that I enjoyed about this week's episode.

Visually, I thought it looked good. I liked the look and feel and think that Jensen did a good job directing.

I enjoyed Rowena. I like her character and I think that Ruth does a wonderful job with her. Her, "but I'm in heels" comment made me laugh out loud.

I continue to be intrigued by the Darkness and find myself mulling over the fact that Death described it as amoral...unaware of or indifferent to 'right' or 'wrong'. Crowley may find the Darkness far harder to manipulate than he anticipates.

Dean's shirt (you know the one) made me think of an episode of Angel, where Angel dressed very similarly and assumed the role of somebody's driver so that he could get close without being recognised.
And I liked him getting shot down by the blonde woman too.

The angel and the demon who walked into a bar..that amused me. But. I do hope that it doesn't become a thing. The rebel alliance. And suddenly they get their own story. [livejournal.com profile] twnchesterangel made the comment on [livejournal.com profile] cassiopeia7's journal that supporting characters are meant to support. And that's what I want to see. The supporting characters supporting Sam and Dean's story, not skipping off to the side with their own separate storyline.

I was pretty ho hum about Castiel's fairly quick and easy fix.I expected it,so there was no tension and they didn't do anything overly interesting with characterisation so, yeah. (Please Show, do something interesting with Castiel this season. There are possibilities this season, what with the Darkness and maybe even God getting involved. But see note above about supporting characters.)

And then Dean refused to let Cas heal him because he 'had it coming' and my heart shattered into a million pieces. Dean has a habit of breaking my heart and...I just couldn't stop thinking about Dean and that line. So of course, that's what I had to write about.

So episode 11.02 made me think more thinky thoughts and I am very keen to see episode three because it feels very much like last season, that the opening gambit is sort of a three ep arc.

Firstly, kudos to [livejournal.com profile] indiachick for correctly predicting the fire solution! I may have bemused my son by shouting Ha! Indiachick picked that! at my TV screen. :\

I really enjoyed smart!Sam and I'm interested in the Crowley/demons story line, and what's going on in the cage...especially given that Sam seemed to be having cage flashbacks. I have to say though, that the angel storyline didn't interest me at all this week. And that's a shame because with the Darkness coming back into the world, there's potential for the angels to become interesting again, provided they can integrate them back into the main storyline properly. Holding out hope for that to start happening next episode.

This week's coda is shamelessly self-indulgent, in that I wanted the brotherly talk that we didn't get, and it's also a wee bit speculative, in that I throw out some wacky theories because I'm intrigued and finding it fun to speculate!

My all-time favourite ever season opener was Lazarus Rising, back in Season 4. The Season 11 opener hasn't bumped it from top spot, but there was plenty that I engaged with.

To be honest, I was a little ho-hum when I heard that this season's big bad, a pre-creation destructive force of pure evil, was going to be personified as a woman. Really? Again with the women are evil, women are dangerous, destructive forces schtick? Sigh. But actually...so far, I'm liking Amara. The actress who played the un-named Darkness definitely had an other-worldly allure and it got me thinking (which is always good when you're planning to write a coda!) The Darkness came into the world as thick black fog. Why is it suddenly a woman? Women hadn't even been created when the Darkness was locked away. Therefore, the Darkness must've chosen that form. Why?

So here is my episode coda...less a coda though, and more of a prelude. Darkness POV.

To be honest, I'm still processing the finale. I'm hoping that reading everyone's codas will help with that!
I'm excited about Rowena's storyline. Perplexed by the Darkness and the 'death' of Death. Cautiously optimistic that the boys appear to be together and on the same page and that S11 will see them as a united front and I thought Jared and Jensen were fantastic. Such intense performances from both of them, particularly Jared. It's really little wonder he was so exhausted and wrung out by season's end.
I have to say, I did roll my eyes a little when I saw Dean in the Tight Black Tee-shirt of Evil. And then I settled in to thoroughly enjoy watching Dean smash things up, wearing said tee-shirt.

So anyway, one of my goals for the year was to write a coda for each and every episode and I've done that!

It's been so much fun, not just writing mine, but also reading everyone else's. It has really enhanced my enjoyment of the show and I've loved my interactions with everyone! I'm sort of sad now that it's over.

I want to acknowledge all the peeps at [livejournal.com profile] spn_bunker who were so enthusiastic about codas and [livejournal.com profile] kalliel for starting [livejournal.com profile] spn_x, to give us somewhere specific to squee about S10 and share our S10 works.

I've also been incredibly impressed by the amount of support the members of this fandom give to the Show (the outpouring of support for Jared was just...amazing and awesome and impressive), and to each other. And to other things too, like fandomaid. I didn't do that love meme thing, but I did want to say that I think you're all amazing, genuine, generous people and I feel very privileged to know you all, even if it's just a little.

Alrighty, enough sap. Here is my last S10 coda. Probably the last. Unless further inspiration hits.

There were a lot of things I loved about this episode.Competent, lethal Dean was one of them. So hot. I know, I know, shallow. Jared's brilliant performance was another. That man gives everything he's got to his performances and to this fandom and when you meet him he's so lovely and giving. I was so sorry to hear that he's struggling right now, but it honestly doesn't surprise me, given how much of himself he gives, so much of the time. It takes a toll.

Also, if you haven't read it yet, [livejournal.com profile] frozen_delight wrote an awesome coda to this episode, No matter how bad it gets which they kindly gifted to me. There were highs and lows in this week's episode. It gets a great big thumbs up for smart!Sam solving the problem with research and knowledge and for that lovely scene with Dean in the confessional. Jensen nailed the delivery--from the slightly comic oversell of Dean's shortcomings for the ghost's benefit, to his more serious revelations about his hopes for the future. I thought the lighting was particularly well done too; the way the shadows played over Dean's face like the bars on a cage was lovely.
Isabella's story and the Rowena/Olivette scenes I thought were very poorly integrated--jarringly so--and Rowena's storyline dragged. And I actually really like Rowena's character, so I can imagine that for those who don't those scenes must have been excrutiating.

Please writers, may we have more smart!Sam solving problems and kicking ass? And more Sam and Dean working together and supporting each other.

I've only watched this episode once so far. There were some things about it that didn't quite gel: The sloppy assumptions about the parasite. Cole's overuse of nicknames. The lost opportunities - for Dean to address the fact that Cole tortured Sam, for Sam to bond with Kit's wife, to talk about his feelings, for Dean to take his shirt off.

The ep did make me think a lot about Sam and Dean as soldiers in a never-ending war and the impact that must've had on them.

So there's been a whole heap of speculation on my flist about 10.14.Specifically, did Dean actually kill Cain? It brought to mind a quote from Dune: "Do not count a human dead until you've seen his body. And even then you can make a mistake." In the SPN 'verse, truer words were never spoken.

Another Hellatus! Ahhhhh!

Now that I've got that out of the way, I thought this episode was pretty solid.
Timothy Odmundson's performance as Cain was outstanding. He was frightening in a very other-worldly kind of way, and he looked good while doing it. :) I enjoyed Cas and Crowley and Rowena, because this week their stories were a part of Sam and Dean's story. Jared and Jensen knocked it out of the park, although I could've done with a little more of Sam. The scene where Dean admitted that he was scared, was it just me, or did that feel as if it had been cut? I felt like there should've been something more.

Anyway, I've tried something a little different this week. Just some snippets that I wanted to explore more. The POV changes part way through.
