If you are a fan of sci-fi or simply of engaging, well-written stories and awe-inspiring, fabulous art then you simply must read
brutti_ma_buoni's stunning Triton 'verse, a J2 RPS AU.
I fell in love with the original Three Steps from Triton, back in 2013 when it was first posted and
brutti_ma_buoni has just now posted a sequel Leap of Faith which is every bit as brilliant as the first.
Both stories also come with magnificent art by
cassiopeia7, art-guru of all things deep space. I mean, it's Deb and it's space...a perfect storm of art which must be viewed!

The Original: Three Steps Past Triton
Teaser
The hangar lock ain't exactly romance central, but there's plenty of sex for sale here. Sixteen months on a freighter'd make any spacer think pretty much anything other than his own hand and his own skanky crew looks like a banquet. Jensen's seen it often, and done it enough to not condemn Nix and Wack for the glee with which they pounce on a pair of rank-looking nightbirds, all cheap stink, ragged net and slick silver painted on mouth and tits.

Happy reading y'all!

The Original: Three Steps Past Triton
Fandom/Genre: SPN: space adventure
Pairing(s): Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles
Rating: NC17
Word Count: 24,000
Summary: Jensen is a space captain. Jared is a space whore. When Jensen gives Jared just one chance, the kid takes it. They travel through hell and beyond, though that's partly astronomy, not metaphor. And in the end, maybe it wasn't the kid that needed saving.

What I thought: I was hooked from the first word by the rich and detailed world-building, the complex, three dimensional characters, the engaging plot and the beautiful storytelling. The author uses the vernacular in the narrative and it's impossible to read the story without falling into the cadence and rhythm that farmboy-turned- -space-captain Jensen uses when he speaks. Grumpy, terse, scarred and flawed are some of my favourite Jensen flavours and Jared is beautifully portrayed as a bright, sunshiney-happy guy who has plenty of reasons to not be as happy as he is. The depths of the characters are slowly revealed to us--and the sex-scenes are great!

These days, Jensen thinks first. He thinks about the high likelihood of disease among these unfortunate whores, and the even higher rate of sleazebag pimps and lovers who hang about them, ready to part a careless spacer from his hard-earned. Now, Jensen can handle himself in any fight you care to name – last guy to find that out died with a blade in his eyeball, and a look of great surprise – but these days, he's older, more cautious, more tired. And, given the choice, he'll mostly handle himself, and save himself the trouble of involving others.
Which is handy, in deep space. Jensen's made a lot of money, lately, by not caring so much if he never sees nor touches another human.
So that ain't what's happening here. Yet Jensen ain't moving on.
The Sequel: Leap of Faith
Fandom: CW RPF
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: NC17
Words: 20,000
Warnings: sickness, betrayal, character death
Summary: Jared and Jensen took to the stars, where there's no happy ever after but a whole bunch of adventure to be had together. Sometimes, adventuring bites back. Some things, you can't face together. Someday, maybe, it'll all come right. (Jared hopes to hell, because it's getting lonely out in the black.)

What I thought: Firstly, I'm a sucker for a happy ending, so don't let the warnings put you off! In this sequel, the author expands on their wonderful universe in a very credible and natural way and the new characters are engaging and believable. All the same elements that I loved in the first story, are still there: the rich and detailed world-building, the complex, three dimensional characters, the engaging plot, the beautiful storytelling and the lovely narrative tone. The main characters have developed in ways that feel very believable and organic, the story is suspenseful, and the ending feels nicely rounded off and finished, but still leaves room for
brutti_ma_buoni to play in this 'verse again if they ever get the urge to. And boy, do I hope there's more one day!

Teaser
“Third time lucky, Liddie, and so it was for us all,” is what Jared says, and after, he truly believes that is what cursed them when voyage number four rolls around.
And yet, just then when he’s speaking, Jared’s life is sweeter than he knows how to tell. Sure, there’s a disconnect, but that’s something all families have when they’re broken through maturity. Isn’t it?
Liddie’s so happy on her station, with her big bold husband who’s never set foot in zero-g and she thinks hung the stars. She’s rounding out in the belly, talking names and futures, schooling and dreams, and Jared’s so proud of his little sister, and the things she didn’t fall to, he hardly knows how to express it.

Now, sure, Liddie and Jonah don’t take to Jensen so much. But if Jared worried about people in the verse not taking to Jensen Ackles, he’d spend his life in desperation, and that’s never been his way. Jared’s known Jensen’s worth since he first set eyes on the baddest captain of them all, and eight years down the stretch, through love and livelihood and shared space, he’s never had cause to doubt it. Curse him, maybe, at a three bells changeover shift when the captain’s feeling amorous and the offcoming watch officer just wants to crash, but that’s the kind of problem most folks would kill for.[spoiler redacted]
Maybe Jonah sniffs at Jensen’s farm world ‘ain’t’s and ‘don’t’s that Jared’s catching now, and maybe Jared won’t be godfathering Liddie’s brood any time foreseeable. But Jared’s happy. And maybe Liddie’s forgotten what gutter Jensen picked him up from, but Jared’ll never forget whoring, till that one captain saw he could be more.
